Kenneth L. Allers, age 87, died Monday, March 10, 2008 at the Keystone Nursing Care Center in Keystone following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, on Friday, March 14, 2008 at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone with Rev. Dr. James Eggert officiating. Interment will be held at the Keystone Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the Merkel-Bockholt American Legion Post #107 of Keystone. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Keystone from 3 to 7 PM on Thursday.
Kenneth was born on a farm northwest of Keystone on January 4, 1921. He was the son of Ben and Agnes (Havron) Allers. He was baptized July 3, 1921 in Cedar Rapids. Kenneth was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone where he was confirmed April 2, 1950. He had served on the church council, door greeter and as an usher at funeral services.
He graduated from Keystone High School in 1939. Kenneth worked on the farm and drove trucks before entering the retail grocery store with his father and brother, Dale. They operated Allers Grocery and Locker for forty-three years.
Kenneth joined the Army Air Force during World War II where he served in the European Theater with the 9th Army Air Force. He was credited with one hundred twenty-six combat missions.
On June 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lorna Jurgens at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone. He and Lorna loved to dance and belonged to the Cedar Valley Polka Club. Kenneth also loved to golf.
Kenneth was a life member of the American Legion, was a County Legion Commander, a Boy Scout Leader, served on the Keystone City Council and the City Park Board and as a park care taker. He was a member of the Keystone Businessmen's Club, Keystone Turners, the Rifle Club and Tara Hills Country Club. He also organized the "Terrific Trees Committee", serving as chairman for five years. In addition he gave many hours of volunteer work in his community.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna of Keystone; his daughter, Nancy Owens and her husband, Gene of Cedar Rapids, and grandson, Tim Owens and wife, Brooke of Omaha, NE; his son, Kenneth Allers and his wife, Deb and grandchildren, Matt Allers of Webster City, and Amy Allers of Woodbury, MN. Kenneth truly loved and enjoyed his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; his brother, Dale Allers; and his step-parents, Glen and Helen McCall.
