Wilbert V. Hunter, 32, of the Maryland State Police, was frozen to death when he and others became lost in a blizzard on Chesapeake bay for several hours last night. The party left Crisfield, Md., yesterday afternoon and was attempting to pull two sleds loaded with 2,000 pounds of food and medical supplies across the ice that has locked the bay for several days.
When the party failed to appear rescue squads were sent out from the coast guard cutter Travis, anchored off the island after clearing a channel. Their efforts were hampered by snow and severe cold.
