Dr. Robert E. Mailliard, age 94, of Storm Lake, died March 1, 2004 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be Friday, March 5, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery with full military rites by AMVETS Post #66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 3:00 on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where a Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be held at 8:00 p.m. The family will be present from 7-9:00 p.m. Friends wishing to send condolences may do so online.

Robert Eloy Mailliard was born on January 25, 1910 to Ely and Clara (Huey) Mailliard at Randolph, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Francis Catholic Church in Randolph. He spent his childhood in his parents' home at Randolph, attending school there before graduating from St. Francis High School in 1927.

Robert served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps 46th Armed Medical Battilion, 4th Armed Division from March 17, 1941 until his honorable discharge as a Lt. Colonel on November 3, 1945. He received a Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster among his many citations and medals of distinguished service during the war.

Robert attended Wayne State College and then received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Creighton University, where he was an honor student. Dr. Mailliard conducted a successful medical practice in Storm Lake for many years until his retirement in 1984.

Robert Mailliard was united in marriage to Alice L'Heureux in 1935 at Concord, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with a son and a daughter. Alice passed away in 1981. Dr. Mailliard married Helen Jolliffe in Arizona in 1983.

Dr. Mailliard was a lifelong member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge and was one of the original founders of the KAYL radio station in Storm Lake.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen, of Storm Lake; his son, Dr. Robert H. Mailliard of Bella Vista, AR; his daughter, Sharon and husband James Robinson of Morgantown, WV; eight grandchildren: Nancy Mailliard of West Des Moines, IA, Jennifer Reed of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mark Mailliard of Urbandale, IA, Mike Mailliard of Iowa City, IA, Julianna Caggiano of Bell Aire, TX, Diana Denton of Cary, NC, James Robinson of Cheyenne, WY, and Keith Robinson of Vienna, VA; brothers: Larry Mailliard of Kansas City, Missouri and Eugene Mailliard of Norfolk, Nebraska; and many extended family members and friends.

Preceding Dr. Mailliard in death were his parents; his first wife, Alice; and four brothers.
