Mrs. E. B. Berberet Dies Christmas, Just Short Of 100 Years
Mrs. E. B. Berberet of Edina, the oldest resident of Knox County, lived to see her 100th Christmas, but died at her home here at 11:23 o'clock Christmas night, Dec. 25, 1954, fifty-five days short of her 100th birthday, which she would have observed Feb. 18 had she lived. She suffered a severe heart attack four weeks prior to her death, from which she did not recover. Although not a native of the county, she probably lived here longer continuously than any other citizen, ninety-five years.
The body of Mrs. Berberet lay in state at the family residence on West Morgan Avenue until time for funeral services, which were held at St. Joseph Church at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning by the Rev. Terence Mullins. Burial was in the old Catholic cemetery here by the grave of Mr. Berberet, who died April 29, 1923, at the age of 85 years.
Mrs. Berberet is survived by seven children, Leo F. Berberet and Lorraine, Mrs. Leo B. Kelly, and Miss Loretto Berberet, twins of Edina, Thomas J. Berberet and Cletus J. Berberet of Springield, Ill., Mora W. Berberet of Davenport, Iowa, and Lawrence "Larry" Berberet o Keokuk, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
Agatha Miller Berberet, the last survivor of eleven children of Nicholas and Mary Steffen Miller, was born Feb. 18, 1855, at Matteson Station, near Joliet, Ill.
When she was 5 years old she came with her parents to Knox County in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. They bought a section of land eight miles north of Edina and built a log house there, where Mrs. Berberet grew to womanhood.
She was married to Enos B. Berberet April 10, 1877, when she was 22 years old, at St. Joseph Church here by the late Rev. John Fitzgerald. Eleven children were born to them, the seven mentioned as surviving and a son, Francis P. "Frank" Berberet who died Nov. 16, 1952, and three others who died in infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Berberet lived the first twenty-seven years of their married life on a farm northeast of Edina, now known as the John Kern place. There Mr. Berberet operated a brick kiln a number of years.
The family moved a half century ago, in 1904, to Edina and Mr. Berberet became engaged in the telephone business. Mr. and Mrs. Berberet lived a year at the former Mike Stablein home, the present Mike Karhoff property, and then moved to the house on Morgan Avenue which has been the family home since.
Mr. and Mrs. Berberet, in 1927 celebrated their golden anniversary and renewed their wedding vows at the same altar they were married.
Mrs. Berberet's health until her last illness was exceptionally good for a woman of her age. She was active in church work and civic affairs until she fell and broke her left hip July 23, 1947. She had recovered satisfactorily from that injury and enjoyed reading and doing light household tasks until suffering the heart attack last month.
Mrs. Berberet was the last living charter member of St. Ann's Society and was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. Her memory went back to when the original St. Joseph Church was being used and she recalled attending services when she was a girl.
Relatives here from a distance for the funeral services Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Frock of Danville, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Berberet and Thomas J. Berberet of Springfield, Ill., Lawrence Berberet and family of Keokuk and Mr. and Mrs. Mora W. Berbert of Davenport, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Mora Berberet arrived Friday and were here at the time of the death of Mr. Berberet's mother.
