Alice barely survived diphtheria in the winter of 1886, when she was eight years old. Her two younger sisters died. It took several years for Alice to recover, but she went on to become a teacher and taught for three years in Atchison County, Kansas, before marrying Ernest M. Jahne on September 21, 1904. On July 7, 1905 she died after giving birth to her son Charles R. Jahne.
