Birth: in County Cavin, Ireland

Migrated to United States around 1836, first living in Albany, Albany county, New York.

1st presidential vote was for General Franklin Pierce, who was nominated on 49th ballot at June 1852's Baltimore convention. Moved to Almont, Lapeer county, Michigan with wife, north of Detroit, moved to Atchison county, Missouri, briefly to Iowa because of bushwackers, then returned to migrate to Jasper county, Missouri around where he was a merchant then city marshal. Became a Republican because of the Civil War.

Removed family to a 200 acre farm southeast of Carthage following Civil War, then the Grasshopper Plague of 1866 reportedly caused James, to trade 40 acres for a home on east 4th street in town of Carthage.

Census: 1870, age 39 Sarcoxie township, Jasper county, Missouri with wife & four children, a merchant.

Came Here in 1867 -Was One of the Early Day Marshals of Carthage


James Flanigan, pioneer Carthage resident, and one of the town's early day marshals, celebrated his 95th birthday anniversary yesterday.
Mr. Flanigan was born May 2, 1831 in County Caven, Ireland. He came to the United States when a boy of 11 and in 1867 he came to Carthage and has been a resident here ever since. He served as city marshal in the eighties.
Time has dealt lightly with him and despite his years he is able to be up and around and enjoy life. He makes his home with his daughter, Mrs. C. R. Mealey, 515 East Fourth street. Attorney John H. Flanigan is a grandson

Dies Here (Thursday)

James Flanigan, 96 years old, former Missouri peace officer and farmer, died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mahlon T. Thornton, 109 West Nineteenth street. Born in Ireland in 1830, Flanigan came to this country when 38 years old, settling near Carthage, Mo., where he lived most of his life. He was at one time city marshal of Carthage. He farmed near there and operated a store. In the last ten years he had spent his time between his daughter and son, Frank Flanigan, 712 East Forty-fourth street, in Oklahoma City and with relatives in Carthage.

James Flanigan, 96 years old, died Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mahlon T. Thornton, 149 W. 19th street. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. O.R. Mealey of Carthage, Mo., Mrs. Thornton of Oklahoma City, and one son, Frank Flanagan of Oklahoma City. The body will be forwarded by Marshall & Harper Thursday morning to Carthage, Mo., where funeral services and burial will be held.
