Bernice married her first husband, Russel Elmore and they had two children, Sheril who married Don Hurd and a son Roger who married Zela Page. Bernice later married Clarence Sykes.

---Funeral services for Bernice L. Sykes, 72, of Hurdland, will be held at Hudson-Rimer Park View Chapel, Kirksville, Thursday afternoon (Oct. 1, 1981) at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Beryle Cragg of Brashear will conduct the services. Music will be provided by Harold Moyer, soloist, and Mildred Cooper, organist. Selections will be "In The Sweet By And By" and "Beyond The Sunset." Burial will be in the LaPlata Cemetery.
---Mrs. Sykes died Monday (Sept. 28, 1981) at 9:30 in her home.
---Born June 1, 1909 in LaPlata, she was the daughter of Edward and Orel Lock Gudehus. On Apr. 3, 1954 at LaPlata, she was married to Clarence Sykes who survives. Also surviving are one son, Roger Elmore of Kirksville; one daughter, Mrs. Don (Sherril) Hurd of Green Bay, Wis.; one brother, Glen Gudehus of Edina; four sisters, Mildred Bruce, Mrs. Olie (Irene) Story, Mrs. Dean (Rachel) Davison and Mrs. Cleo (Ruth) Hunter, all of LaPlata and six grandchildren, Brian Hurd, Steve Hurd, David Hurd, Danny Elmore, Beth Elmore and Mike Elmore.
---Mrs. Sykes received her B.A. and Master's Degrees from the Northeast Missouri State University. For 37 years she taught in Adair And Knox County schools before her retirement.
---Mrs. Sykes was a member of the Gibbs Christian Church where she served as a deacon. For 45 years she served as a Sunday school teacher in the church.
---Bearers will be: Harold Smith, Charles Spencer, Jimmie Stribling, Gary Knotts, Gary Moyer and Bob Calef.
