José Mariano Carrillo y Millán was born at Loreto, Baja California, New Spain, about 1720. He was the son of soldado Juan Carrillo y Pérez and Lucía Efigenia Millán y Martín (1703?-1758). His parents were married at Loreto, Baja California, about 1718, and never came to Alta California. José enlisted as a soldado de cuera and served many years on the peninsula. He arrived in Alta California just a few years before his death. He died at Monterey Presidio and was buried in the Presidio Cemetery (San Carlos) January 28, 1782 (SC Death 00252). He was never married.
