Col. Gerald Greene
Col. Gerald Greene, 87, retired military officer, died June 25, 1993 at his home at Perch Lakes near Gaylord. Col. Greene was born in Hart, July 20, 1905.
He attended Michigan State University and joined the Detroit Police Dept. in Sept., 1927. He attained the rank of police lieutenant and retired in September, 1952.
Col. Greene was very active in the army reserves and he dedicated a great deal of his time to that effort. He retired with the rank of Colonel, Military Police Corps, in 1967.
After his retirement from the Detroit Police Dept., he was later employed by the Dept. of the Army as the director of a criminal investigation unit that was responsible for 15 northern and midwestern states. Col. Greene also retired from federal civil service in 1967.
During World War II, Col. Greene served with the US Army in Europe as part of the military government in Germany.
When finally retiring in 1967, Col. Greene moved to the Gaylord area and resided at Perch Lakes and later in Hawthorne, FL. He was a member of the Gaylord Elks Club and the Northland Sportsmen's Club.
Col. Greene was formerly married to Josephine Dipzinski, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Gerald R. (Beverly) Greene of Gainesville, FL; two daughters, Patricia A. Kroh of Canton, MI, and Carole B. (Richard) Hunter of Sylvania, OH; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Greene of Perry; two sisters, Burdetta Leyrer of Lansing and Ione Bush of Eugene, OR.
Funeral services for Col. Greene were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, 1993 from the Nelson Funeral Home, the Rev. Fr. Francis Murphy officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
