Capt. Stanford was mortally wounded and captured at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 7, 1864. His gunshot wound resulted in the amputation of his right leg by Federal Surgeons. His burial was originally in Nashville's City Cemetery with all other Confederate Dead. In 1869 they were taken up and reburied in Confederate Circle (Mass Grave) in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee.
