"As a teenager in Atlantic, Iowa, he gained a reputation for his speed as a runner. According to "The Daily Telegraph", he was "one of Atlantic's coming foot racers" (23 June 1893, p. 3). Later it was reported that he "purchased himself a pair of $5.00 running shoes and is going into training" (14 July 1893, p. 3). "Will" made an exhibition run on the evening of July 13, 1893. In 1895, he attended military school in Iowa Falls, located about 125 miles northeast of Atlantic.
"About 1899 after the family had moved to Missouri, William married Elizabeth Regan, daughter of Timothy and Susan G. Regan of Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri.
"Elizabeth Regan was called Lizzie by members of her family. After their marriage, about 1899, the couple went to live in Chicago. There, he attended the University of Chicago and graduated from medical school.
"About a year and a half after Dr. Hesselgrave began to practice medicine in Lake Villa, Lake County, Illinois, he died suddenly on 18 August 1907, at the age of 29, leaving his wife and three young children." [2nd born child died as an infant]
