Pansy was born to Andrew Pickett and Lucy Helen Knowles Pickett. When she was a month old her mother died and when she was 2 months old she was given for adoption to the Austin family in Vermillion. She grew up in what is now the Austin-Whittemore house in Vermillion, belonging to the Historical Society.
On Dec 21, 1906 she married Arthur "Buck" Whittemore in Sioux City IA. He was a University of South Dakota football coach, he died in August of 1938.
She was survived by her son Arthur A Whittemore, a well known pianist in New York, four daughters Helen Vann of Dunedin,FL, Dorothy Olson of Tierra Verda FL, Mrs Roland Tollesson of Sioux Falls SD adn Elizabeth Osborn of Stockton KS.
Her mother Lucy Helen Knowles was the sister of Freeman Knowles a well known Populist and editor of several newspapers in Deadwood. Lucy's mother Mary Spurr Knowles died in 1873 in Vermilion and is buried in this cemetery.
