Karin was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Messler. While growing up in Beresford, SD, she was active in Girl Scouts and had earned her First Class Girl Scout badge. After graduating from Beresford High School in 1983, Karin attended Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City, IA. She was still a student there at the time of her death.

Karin died when the vehicle she was driving collided with another at the intersection of Highway 48 and Union County Road 1-C, approximately half a mile east of I-29 Exit 31. Five other girls were injured in the accident; and, the girls from both vehicles were from Beresford, SD. A stop sign violation was believed to have been the primary cause of the accident.

Karin was survived by both parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
