She was the youngest of six daughters. She had one brother who died before she was born.

She married a salesman, but aspired for a higher position. She was called a "social climber" by some relatives. Her nickname was Bessie, but the name didn't seem to fit as she behaved very formally. Her husband, John, traveled for work so she often stayed with her sister, Josephine, in Chicago. She had two children; Virginia and John.

A few stories of her extravagance have come down through the generations. It is said that she left her husband for a few days because he would not let her buy a hat she wanted. It was too expensive. It is unknown if she came back to him with the hat or without. And the year on her headstone is inaccurate. She was fibbing about her age to the very end.
