One of 13 children born to Henry & Mary Hudkins. She moved to Barbour County, and remained there until her marriage to Arnold Poling on March 28, 1847. Together they had six children - three sons and three daughters: Miranda, Jerucia, Mary Florence, Ira W., James H., and Henry E. All but two preceded her in death. James died at young manhood and Henry was killed while working in a glass factory in Alexandria on Sept. 14, 1906. The other two children died in infancy. She was survived by: 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mr. Poling died Nov. 3, 1870, when he was 45 years old, and she married Rev. Jesse Sparks to whom she was married 22 years before his death when he was 90 years old. She had been blind for over 15 years, and had lived with her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Zuck for more than 20 years.
