Silas Titus, third child and 2nd s. of John Titus and Abigail Carpenter, b. of record May 18, 1656 at Rehoboth, Mass. He d. testate at Rehoboth, his will dated Feb. 22, 1727/8 but not proved until December 15, 1741. The actual date of his death is not of record and whether he d. shortly before the proof of his will or quite some time beforehand is unknown.

Silas was married to three wives, but only had children by his first two wives. The basis of all compiled vital records for Rehoboth, Mass. is James N. Arnold's 1897 published "Vital Record of Rehoboth, Mass..." Arnold listed the births of Silas' six known children, four by first wife Sarah and two by second wife Hannah, as the family of "Gilbert" Titus (p. 756.) In addition, Arnold copied the burial of Silas' first wife Sarah as the wife of "Gilbert" Titus (p. 881.) However, in the same printed vital records is a supplement for Rehoboth taken from the Plymouth Colony Records, transcribed from the original town records by William Carpenter, Town Clerk, in which Silas' eldest two children are recorded as:

• p. 908. Mary, the daughter of Sylas Titus, was born the 30th of March, 1681.

• p. 904. Sillas, the son of Silas Titus, bourn the 12th of August [1683.]

Silas Titus' mother, Abigail Carpenter, was the sister of Dea. William Carpenter (1631-1703), latter who at the time of the above two entries was Rehoboth's Town Clerk, and would have been well aware of who nephew Silas was, and that there was no Gilbert in the Titus family of Rehoboth. Thereafter in the printed Rehoboth VRs, Silas' 2nd and 3rd marriages are correctly identified as being with "Silas" Titus.

The following will abstracts partially define the Silas Titus family.

• Order for settlement of the estate of Joshua Ormsbe [q.v., Ormsby] of Rehoboth, dated Aug. 13, 1729 [BrisCPR 6:312].

• Settlement of the estate of Joshua Ormsbe of Rehoboth betw. his former widow Mehetibel Titus now wife of Silas Titus, & his children: Joshua Ormsbe (only son) & daus: Mehetibel wife of Joshua [sic Josiah] Fuller, Mary Ormsbe & Ann Ormsbe, dated Oct. 21, 1729. Commissioners: Abiah Carpenter, Noah Mason & Noah Butterworth [ibid. 6:312/3].

• Order to Josiah Fuller of Rehoboth, Yeoman, Exec. of the estate of his grandfather Silas Titus of Rehoboth, dated Dec. 14, 1741 [ibid. 10:117].

• Will of Silas Titus of Rehoboth, Yeoman, dated Feb. 22, 1727/8, probated Dec. 15, 1741. Wife Mehitable given the "moveable Estate she brought with her to my house." Sons: Silas (eldest) & Paul Titus. Daus: Martha Titus & Esther Hill wife of John Hill. Grddau. Sarah Newell [nee Fuller, eldest dau. of Silas's eldest dau. Mary (Titus) Fuller]. Grdson. Josiah Fuller [son of dau. Mary (Titus) Fuller] to be executor. Witns: Daniel Carpenter, Peter Walker & Bithiah Lyon [ibid. 10:118/9].

• Will of Josiah Fuller of Rehoboth, gentleman, "being very sick," dated Jan. 6, 1753, probated 3 Apr. 1753. Wife Mehitable [e.g., Mehitable nee Ormsby]. Includes "liberty of my wife's mother [i.e., widow Mehitable (nee Boyden)(Ormsby) Titus] to live with her in my house." Witns: Thomas Bowen, John Smith & Ezekiel Read [ibid. 13:333/4.]

On Oct. 23, 1679 at Dedham, Mass., Silas m. 1) Sarah Battelle, dau. of Thomas Battelle and Mary Fisher, b. Aug. 8, 1654 at Dedham. She was buried Apr. 8, 1689 at Rehoboth, Mass. The children of Silas Titus and Sarah Battelle, b. of record at Rehoboth, are:

• i. Mary Titus, b. Mar. 30, 1681, d. after Jan. 17, 1710/11; no record of her marriage can be found but she m. by 1704 as his 2nd wife, Robert Fuller, s. of Jonathan Fuller and Elizabeth Wilmarth, b. Mar. 2, 1673/4 at Rehoboth. Robert Fuller d. intestate Dec. 30, 1710 at Attleboro, Mass. [Attleboro VRs] with the widow Mary presenting the inventory of Robert's estate to the court Jan. 17, 1710/1. A subsequent undated and incomplete division of the estate was made, but the record was never completed. She apparently was dead by the time her father wrote his will in Feb. 1727/8 as she is not directly named in the will. That Mary Titus, dau. of Silas, was the wife of Robert Fuller is proved by the fact that Silas named his grandson Josiah Fuller, the recorded son of Robert Fuller and his wife Mary, executor of his maternal grandfather Silas Titus' will. Four children of the family.

• ii. Silas Titus, Jr., b. Aug. 12, 1683; m. Feb. 16, 1709/10 at Topsfield, Mass., Mary Averill, dau. of William Averill. She d. Feb. 9, 1729/30 at Attleboro, Mass. Four known children of the family.

• iv. Martha Titus, b. Apr. 1, 1689; d. unmarried Sept. 18, 1762 at Rehoboth, in her 74th yr. [i.e., Æ 74.]

On July 4, 1689 at Rehoboth, Silas m. 2) the widow Hannah Thurston, dau. of John Millerd and his 2nd wife Elizabeth, and widow of Daniel Thurston. She was b. Dec. 23, 1653 and d. before Jan. 24, 1716/17. She had m. 1) Dec. 6, 1681 at Rehoboth, Daniel Thurston of Medfield, Mass., who d. July 23, 1683. Hannah's sister Sarah Millerd, b. Oct. 15, 1655, was the 2nd wife of Silas' eldest brother, John Titus, Jr.

The children of Silas Titus and Hannah Millerd, b. of record at Rehoboth, are:

• v. Paul Titus, b. May 14, 1690. In 1736 was a member of the Newman Cong. Church at East Providence, RI and was dism. that date to an unstated church and place. He made his will June 30, 1746 having enlisted in the "expedition against Canada," which was probated July 9, 1747 at Providence, R. He is claimed to have d. Jan. 4, 1747[sic] at Martha's Vineyard (Dukes County), Mass.. On Oct. 17, 1741 at Rehoboth he pub. the intent to m. Experience Robinson. Although her family identity is not readily apparent, the writer suspects she was the widow Robinson and knows who she was and that the intended marriage never occurred. Review of Paul Titus's overall land holdings and estate would be needed to confirm the writer's latter assumption.

• vi. Esther Titus, b. Oct. 17, 1692, d. June 22, 1729 at Rehoboth; m. Aug. 11, 1720 at Rehoboth as his 1st wife, John Hill. She d. June 22, 1729 at Rehoboth Four children of the marriage. John Hill m. 2) Feb. 23, 1729/30 at Rehoboth, Lydia Kendrick.

Jan. 31, 1679/80 at Medfield, Mass. and d. after Jan. 6, 1753. Since the death of Silas Titus Mehitable undoubted had been a member of the household of her son-in-law Dr. Josiah Fuller since in Josiah's will he provided the privilege for her to continue residing with Josiah's widow, Mehitable's own namesake daughter. The elder Mehitable had m. 1) Dec. 22, 1704 at Medfield, Mass., Joshua Ormsby, s. of John Ormsby and Grace Martin, b. Dec. 9, 1672 at Rehoboth, Mass. Joshua Ormsby d. intestate May 28, 1715 at Rehoboth. Their children included eldest dau. Mehitable, the wife of Dr. Josiah Fuller, b.
