In 1860, he was a machinist presumably living in or near Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Harrisburg July 31, 1862, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. F, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.

He married Ellen McGrath and fathered Thomas F. (b. 10/16/75), Matilda (b. 10/23/78), and John D. (b. 05/01/78). In 1880, he was living with his family in Philadelphia but by 1890 he was residing in Harrisburg. He is in the 1887 Harrisburg City Directory with his occupation listed as grocer and his residence given as 700 N. 7th Street.
