SWAINSBORO -- James Neal Lewis, 76 died June 11 at Vinson Veterans Medical Center in Dublin.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Emanuel County, where he was a direct descendent of founding pioneer families. He was a graduate of Swainsboro High School and a 1944 State 4-H Champion in farm machinery and animal husbandry. He was an alumnus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He also served in the National Guard. He was a retired farmer and electrician. He was co-owner and operator of the Swainsboro Freezer Locker. He was instrumental in attracting industry to Swainsboro by donating property for the building and expansion of the Empire Expressway and industrial development near Swainsboro. He was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Oris Ridgdill Lewis of Swainsboro; sons, Jimmie N. Lewis of Swainsboro, Gary Lewis of Byron and Mickey W. Lewis of Warner Robins; daughter, Melanie J. Lewis Johnson of Swainsboro; sister, Elizabeth Palmer of Swainsboro; and grandchildren, Cole and Neal Lewis, both of Byron, and Zachary TjBoux Johnson of Swainsboro.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home in Swainsboro.

FUNERAL: 4 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, burial in Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Twin City.

SWAINSBORO - Final rites for James Neal Lewis, 76, were observed at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 1998, from the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home. Elder Tommy Rountree officiated, assisted by Elder Manning Temples. Burial was in Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Twin City.

He died Thursday evening, June 11, in Vinson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Dublin, following a long illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Emanuel County, Mr. Lewis was a direct descendant of founding pioneer families in Emanuel County. He was grandson of the late Dora Rountree and Neal W. Lewis, and John Wesley Lawson and Mary Price Lawson. He was the son of the late O.W. and Carrie Lawson Lewis. Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Swainsboro High School, and was the 1944 State 4-H champion in farm machinery and animal husbandry. An alumnus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Mr. Lewis served in the U.S. Army for a period during World War II, and later during the Korean Conflict. He also served in the National Guard.

Mr. Lewis was a retired farmer and electrician. He and his brother, the late Lawson W. Lewis, owned and operated Swainsboro Freezer Locker. He was instrumental in attracting industry to Swainsboro by donating property for building and expansion of Empire Expressway, and industrial development near Swainsboro. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Oris Ridgdill Lewis of Swainsboro; three sons, Jimmie Neal Lewis of Swainsboro, Gary Lewis of Byron, and Mickey W. Lewis of Warner Robins; a daughter, Melanie Jan Lewis Johnson of Swainsboro; a sister, Elizabeth Palmer of Swainsboro; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Mike Ridgdill, Lee Page, James Palmer, Josh Lewis Jr., Dr. Jeff Johnson, Keith Johnson, Carroll Clifton and Samuel E. Flanders. Honorary escort was Joshua Lewis Sr., Kenneth Lawson, George Lawson, Ronnie Palmer, Billie Boatright, Mitch Johnson, Roger Douglas, Fred Porcell, TiBoux A. Johnson and Frank Coleman.
