Born in Stubenville Ohio in a room above the garage. at about 5 years old moved with his mother to Phoenix AZ. growing up during the war he spent many days following his moms boyfriend George about. George worked at Papago Park POW camp and my dad had the run of the camp. He recalled often how nice the German sailors were with him. and George also worked the AC at the local hotel, Dad and Suzie spent many days playing Hookie up in the upper floors o the Union Hotel. He attended Union High School, played football, but did not graduate. Before going into the Army he held numerous jobs such as Loading ice into railroad ice cars where he saw a cousin fall and die, to being a pin boy at a bowling ally,
When in his Jr year, he, a girlfriend and aonther friend and girlfriend were all at 'hole in the wall" near Phoenix. They were climbing about the rock when my dad heard his friend Jimmy Hayden, yelling from the other side but by the time they all got there, it was too late, he had fallen to his death.
Married his first wife and was then drafted into the Army. He was at the end of his Infantry training with orders to Korea when when the Korean war truce was signed thus saving him from being an Infantry man in the war. He went first to Nurnberg Germany at the Pender Barracks. divorced and married his second wife, also from Az, He was stationed in Colorado Springs Colorado. where he again divorced and remarried, this being the final time. He served first as a BAR gunner loader,, then as a cook.
Upon departing the service he went to work at North American Aviation in LA California. At first his jobs were minor, sweeping and such, but one older worker took a liking to Gene and taught him machining and then drafting. From this older man, Gene found a path in life that concluded with his being a Certified Manufacturing Engineer. a title he was most proud of.
His other pride of work is that he helped build the X-15 and often said "I kissed the nose of the x-15. He said of this venture that he was given a drawing of some part, he would machine it out of titanium, have it checked out, then was given another plan, and repeat the process, but titanium was so expensive, they had to sweep up the shavings and turn it in.
He moved the family about the usa a lot, on average every 2 years. Lapuente CA, Buffalo NY, Cheekatowaga NY, Laffyette In, Indianapols In, Powell Tn, Ladson SC, Guthrie OK, Blythville AR, Fon du lac Wi, then finally to Peoria Az.
The move to Buffalo was with a friend named Frank Brown. They had in mind t go eventually to Canada, build a hunting lodge, and start that business. They even built a wood model of it.
Well several parts of land were bought, each more mosquito and black fly infested than the last. and that dream finally waned.
Throughout his life, he loved fishing, would spend hours by the lake. Bought boat after boat, but never used them so much.
