US Navy Officer Walter E. Hileman Sr., served as an amphibious engineer aboard USS SC 1037 and 1067 and as an instructor at Flint MI Navy Engineer School. His ship went down off Attu Aleutian Island in the Bearing Sea, off the coast of Alaska, after being hit by a German U Boat; the crew was rescued by native Alutes, most survived.
Walter was the son of John Edward Benjamin and Mary Everhart Hileman and a direct descendant of the Revolutionary Patriot, Hans Jacob Hileman; from Holland, the Netherlands to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and lastly, Union Co., Illinois.
A life long member of the Fraternal Order of Masons; An Engineer and patented, inventor of industry related machinery. He was a quiet man of strong values and loving nature. He leaves behind his High School sweetheart and wife of 48 years, his beloved children, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
