Aloe Matt Warila, 92, passed away Tuesday evening at the Pioneer Home in Big Timber.
He was born January 29, 1898, in Scofield, Utah the son of Matt and Katherine Warila. His childhood was spent in coal mining communities. From those experiences among many ethnic immigrants, he developed a strong sense of our nation's melting pot. He passed on his appreciation of people to his family and friends.
Aloe was a resident of Montana since 1906 when the family moved to Bear Creek (Red Lodge). He operated the family farm near Boyd until 1939 at which time he worked on the Rostad Ranch near McLeod for four years.
He married Emma Rostad on June 2, 1929, on the East Fork of the Sweet Grass. The family resided in Billings from 1943 until his retirement in 1958. During most of those years, he was employed by Building Services, Inc.
His retirement years had been spent in Big Timber where he enjoyed gardening and fishing. As an older sibling in a family of fourteen, he kept records of the family's "roots" and wrote their history which is greatly appreciated by the younger generations. His talent for the written word and spoken verse have given us rich memories.
He was a member of the Big Timber Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife of Big Timber; a son Gilbert of Escondido, California; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother Eino of Missoula; a sister Elsie Demmel of Chula Vista, CA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the big Timber Lutheran Church on Monday morning at 11:00 with burial in Mountain View Cemetery. The Reverend Haes Holmlund officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. Debbie Hedrick on the organ and Mr. Ken Nelson, soloist.
