Maxwell left home at an early age (about 15) and did the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show (documented during 1905-1906). It may have been longer. He was known during that time as "Freckles".

Funeral services for Maxwell Atkinson Sr., who died Saturday morning at his home in Mt. Calvary after a brief illness, will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mannenbach funeral home, Mt. Calvary, and at 9 a. m. at Holy Cross church there with burial in the adjoining cemetery.
Born Butte, Mont., Feb. 10, 1891, he was a son of John W: and Elisabeth Clark Atkinson. He was married Nov. 23, 1912, at Red Lodge, Mont., to Pauline Schmitz.
Survivors, in addition to Mrs. Atkinson, are six children, Maxwell, Jr. and Willard, Mt. Calvary, Donald. Oakfield, Mrs. Harold Jeske, Larsen, Mrs. Gregor Roehrig, Malone, and Mrs. Ambrose King, city;
31 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Schneider, Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mrs. Paul Wollenweber, Denver. A brother, William, preceded him in death.
Mr. Atkinson was a member of the Holy Name and St. Anthony's societies of the parish.
