Richard L. Balz, 72, of 14107 Steinthal Road, Kiel, died peacefully Sunday evening, October 15, 2006 at Sheboygan Progressive Care Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's & Pulmonary Hypertension.
He was born September 21, 1934, son of the late Arno & Sylvia Rehm Balz.

Rich was a 1952 graduate of Kiel High School and a veteran of the US Navy , serving his country from 1952-1955.
On April 12, 1958 he married Barbara Mattes at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel.

Rich was very skilled in all trades throughout his life and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking and with his wife's design, ideas, and his skills he built their present home from the ground up with the help of his father-in-law and friends. He previously had done heavy construction, worked for F. Pritchard & Son, Kiel from August thru April each year, helping his close friend, Bob thru the busy heating season. He worked at Kohler Generator as a Lab Technician for over 30 years until his retirement. After retirement he continued to keep himself active by working at Lulloff Hardware, Kiel.

Rich was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel, the Kohler Quarter Century Club and an Explorer Scout Leader. He also was a former member of the Kiel City Band and enjoyed playing the coronet in various dance bands in the area.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an animal lover who received joy from the variety of family pets the couple had throughout the years.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Barbara of Kiel, two sons: Michael Balz & Janet Roethel, Kiel, Eric (Sarah) Balz & their children, Jarrid & Travis of Stillwater, MN, cousins, Tom & Donna Balz, Kiel, Lavonne & Melvin "Meps" Stecker, Arizona, sister-in-law, Mary & Rev. Marvin Deerhake, Indiana and their three daughters, step brother-in-law, Rev. Robert & Polly Grossmann & their five children of South Dakota, step sister-in-law, Phyllis Grossmann and her two children other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother & sister-in-law, Frederic "Fritz" & Mona Balz and step brother-in-law, Peter Grossmann.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, October 20, 2006 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel with Rev. Judine Duerwaechter officiating.
Burial will take place in Schleswig, Cemetery, Rockville.
Friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 6th. St., Kiel on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm and at the CHURCH on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of service.
