Arson is suspected in a fire early yesterday morning which claimed the life of an elderly man and leveled a half-block building in the center of Beallsville, Washington County.
Dead is 72-year-old Delbert Detrick of Beallsville.
Mr. Detrick was the former owner of the Dairy Bar, one of the establishments destroyed in the fire.
The blaze broke out around 1:30 am in the long building which housed Miller's Antique Shop and five apartments in addition to the Dairy Bar.
The apartments were vacant and the Dairy Bar was being remodeled for an opening under new management. …..

Delbert Lee Detrick, 71, of Beallsville, died in a fire early Thursday, June 2, 1977.
Born October 28, 1905, in Bittinger, Md., a son of Dennis and Harriett Beachy Detrick, he was a resident in Beallsville for the past 42 years.
Mr. Detrick was a member of the Lutheran Church of Bittinger and a retired employee of Jones and Laughlin Corporation at the No. 4 mine. He was also a member of United Mine Workers Local 1787 or Richeyville.
A retired merchant in Beallsville, he operated the Beallsville Dairy Bar and Grocery for 20 years.
Surviving are his widow Grace Ellen Crumrine Detrick; one son, D. Lee Detrick of San Francisco, Calif.; one daughter, Mary Ellen Gillis of Beallsville; one granddaughter, Amy Gillis; and one grandson, Allan Gillis, both of Beallsville; two brothers, Taymond and Ralph; and two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Duckworth and Miss Leona Detrick, all of Beallsville; two brothers, Elmer, of West Leisenring; Harley of Springs; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Hummel of Cumerland, Md.; and Mrs. Miriam Hummel of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Three brothers, Clayford; Arthur; and Webster; and one sister, Miss Verna Detrick, are deceased.
