Alice Schlegel Heist was the daughter of William and Sarah (Rhoads) Schlegel. She was born in the Dryville, New Jerusalem area. She was the w/o of Charles A. Heist.

My great grandmother.

Alice R.(nee Schlegel) Heist
Mrs. Alice R. Heist, estimable wife of Charles A. Heist, of Schoenersville, clerk in the office of Mervin A. Wertman, county superintendent of schools, died at 6:15 o'clock last evening at the Sacred Heart Hospital after an illness of two months. She was in her 64th year. In the death of Mrs. Heist the Schoenersville church loses one of its most faithful and active members. Taken ill exactly two months prior to her death, Mrs. Heist first suffered from lumbago and rheumatism. Later complications arose and brought about her demise. During the three weeks she was confined to bed at her home and since April 24, when she was removed to the hospital, Mrs. Heist bore up with great fortitude and was a patient sufferer. The high esteem in which she was held by her friends was clearly manifest in the numerous persons in the community calling at the hospital and others inquiring daily concerning her condition by telephone. Mrs. Heist was born in Rockland township, Berks county, a daughter of William and Sarah, nee (Roth,Rhoads) Schlegel, and had been a resident of Schoenersville since January, 1890. On Christmas day in 1880, she was united in marriage to Mr. Heist by the Rev B.E. Kramlich, at Kutztown. Devoutly religious and of kindly Christian qualities, Mrs. Heist was dearly loved by all in the community in which she resided. She was a member of the Lutheran congregation of the Schoenersville church and for a long term of years was assistant superintendent of the primary deparment of the Sunday School. She was one of the most active members of the Ladies Aid society of the curch, having been a diligent and untiring worker in the various activites of the organization. She was one of the group largely instrumental in raising the funds for the new pipe organ which was presented and placed in the church by the Ladies Aid society in 1927. Besides her husband, Mrs. Heist leaves to mourn her passing four children, Beulah, wife of Wilson S. Bilheimer, and Hilda E., wife of Ralph Shankweiler, both of Schoenersville; Harvey L. Heist, Schoenersville, and Allen W. Heist, this city. There also survive ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, together with her aged mother, Mrs. Sarah Schlegel, of Boyertown; five sisters, Mrs. Frank Moyer, New Berlinsville; Mrs. George Luft, Boyertown, Mrs. Hoch, Reading; Mrs. Jerome Gibson, Fleetwood, and Mrs. Edwin Kemp, Lyons, and four brothers, Frank Schlegel, Boyertown; Irvin Schlegel, Dryville,; George Schlegel, Leesport R.1, and Clyde Schlegel, Breinigsville, A daughter, Florence, died in infancy. Her father, William Schlegel, was killed in a railroad accident at Lyons, where he was employed as a crossing watchman, on New Year's Day about thirteen years ago. Arrangement for Mrs. Heist's funeral had not been completed last night.
