US Congressman. He moved to Springfield, Illinois, completed preparatory studies, taught school for several years, then moved to Winchester, Illinois, in 1850. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1856 and commenced to practice law. He was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, (1861-64) and was member of the Illinois State constitutional convention. In 1867, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving until 1871. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law in Carrollton, Illinois, was elected circuit judge of the seventh judicial circuit in 1877 and served until his death at age 52.
