Will and family and his parents went to Johnstown Brown Co, Nebraska in the 1880s to homestead in the Sandhills of Nebraska, also known as the Badlands. This region was well known for struggles between gangs of horse thieves and the vigilantes.. "Kid" Wade, the most famous of the Middleton gang, was finally captured and hanged by a lynching party just east of Ainsworth.

He married Mary Ellen McGinis in 1877, Ohio. They had seven children.

1895 Will's wife Mary and two Children (Nora & Chas.) all died within three months. Death caused by "Lung Fever" Or Dust Pneumonia. Five years later their daughter Mary also died of dust pneumonia. That's when Will BARR loaded up the remaining children and moved to Kansas and then into Oklahoma.

There he married second to Lena Leotta Myers as his second wife. Will and Lena had one son, George Eugene Barr, born in 1906.
