Our loving, devoted mother and grandmother, Elinor May Carey Carlson, 85, died at her home Wednesday, April 6, 2011, after a valiant struggle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Chicosa, Las Animas County, Colo., to Joseph Park Carey and Mildred Davis. She was raised and educated in Trinidad, Colo. She became a schoolteacher and married Leland Wesley Carlson on June 3, 1946. On June 8, 1961, they were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many years in the Primary, Sunday school and as a stake Relief Society education leader.

She will be remembered for her strong devotion to her family and great love for her grandchildren. She had a great appreciation for music and passed that quality on to her posterity. She always had many projects going on at once. Among her accomplishments were many quilts, reupholstered furniture, braided rugs, Christmas books and many other skills used to improve her home. The community enjoyed the popcorn balls, doughnuts, fudge and candies she made for special occasions. Her main goal in life was to raise a family. Sharing time, wisdom, love and service were just a few of her talents, which she continually gave to family and friends.

She taught her family the importance of work, emphasizing that what you put into life, it will come back to you.

Survivors include her brother, Park Carey of Alamosa, Colo.; four sons, Carl (Sandy) of Salem, Idaho, Don (Janice) of Moreland, Idaho, Lynn (Laurie) of St. Anthony, Idaho, and Calvin (Myra) of Kaysville, Utah; daughter, Karen (Phil) Mayne of Brigham City, Utah; 27 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in June of 2009; a sister, Maridell Sykes; a son, Wesley Merle; and three great-grandchildren.

On behalf of the family, we would like to thank Idaho Home Health and Hospice for their kindness and support during this difficult time and wish to express our sincere appreciation to them. We also express gratitude to friends and neighbors for their expressions of sympathy and kindness toward our family.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Parker 2nd Ward LDS Chapel, with Bishop Brent Williams officiating. Friends may call at the Parker Church from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today, April 8, and one hour prior to the services Saturday. Interment will be in Ashton Cemetery under the direction of Bidwell Funeral Home.
