Spann Lamar Fuller was the son of John Elder Fuller and Livonia Jeffers. He was the youngest of 10 children and his father died just months after his birth. His mother ran a boardinghouse during his childhood. His eldest brother moved to Atlanta after the Civil War and opened a general mercantile store, where Spann worked for some time in the 1870s. He moved back to Habersham County, where he opened a store on the town square. He and his wife Mamie adopted two daughters, Maud and Mary, from the Atlanta Home for the Friendless in 1897 in order to qualify for a homestead in Habersham County. The family later relocated to Anderson, South Carolina, where Spann worked for, and operated, several stores. He remained in Anderson until his death in 1937 at age 87. He is buried next to his daughter Maud in Piedmont, South Carolina.
