Daughter of Matthias Pringle Gahagan and Lydia Sledge. Julia married William Heiskell in Greeneville, Greene Co. Tn. on 10 Feb. 1855.

In 1854, Julia was the music teacher at the female branch of Rhea Academy, Greeneville, Tennessee. She received the highest order of education that seminaries of her early days afforded. She was the organist in the Episcopal Church at Greeneville. Her brother, Wesley, was the Rector at the Episcopal Church for a few years.
