James D. Riley Is Killed In Marion
Automobile Accident Near Columbia Is Fatal To Bookkeeper
James D. Riley, 52, was killed almost instantly Sunday night when his automobile driven by him and occupied by Albert Moye, W. D. Ashley and W. S. Stevenson turned turtle twenty miles south of Columbia, near the village of Sandy Hook.
The party was returning to Columbia from Bogalusa where a ball game had been witnessed when the driver lost control of the machine in a bed of loose gravel. All the occupants were thrown clear of the car, Mr. Riley having been picked up 30 feet from the highway with a compound fracture at the base of the brain. He was put into another car and hurried toward Columbia but had expired before arriving at the hospital.
Mr. Riley came from his native home in Jefferson Davis County to Columbia ten years ago and had been head bookkeeper for the Columbia Grocery Company since that time. He was prominent in civic, social and religious activities, being a member of the First Baptist Church here, from which place the funeral rites will be held Tuesday, the Rev. H. W. Ellis, his pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. L. E. Alford, pastor of the First Methodist Church, followed by interment in Columbia Cemetery with Masonic honors.
Besides his wife, who was Miss Minnie Griffith before marriage, the survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Elwyn Wilkinson of Louisville, Ky., and two sons, Frank Riley of Baton Rouge, La., and Ray Riley of Columbia.
Mr. Riley was a cousin of George D. Riley, State Insurance Commissioner, of Jackson.
