Joseph R. "Joe" Dennis of Longview passed away April 22, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center. He was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Seattle to John and Muriel (Mullins) Dennis and grew up in Kingston, Wa. He moved to Longview, Wash. four years ago.

Joe was a Merchant Seaman during World War II. He owned and operated a Tavern in Kingston in the 1960's, worked for Blossom Brothers, was a tree topper in the logging industry and retired in 1994 as a Cat operator, dredging through Operating Engineers Union 302.

Joe was also a member of the Long Beach Elks. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, gardening, picking berries, digging clams and oysters, crabbing and helping others. He also enjoyed traveling to and from Yuma, Ariz., and roaming around in the dessert.

Joe was the most likeable person. He was honest, had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He dearly loved all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On Dec. 10, 1971, he married Shirley McGraw in Longview. She survives him at home. Also surviving are two sons, Mike Dennis of Hoquiam, Wa and Steve Dennis of Port Angeles; two stepsons, Rob Sams of Welton, Ariz and Rick Sams of Woodland; a stepdaughter, Shelly Bailey of Longview; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by a son, Shane Dennis; and a brother, John C. Dennis. A memorial service will held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park and Creamatory. Family friend Rev. Jack McWain will officiate
