A 5' 6 1/2" dark-haired, dark-eyed and dark-complexioned Civil War veteran who volunteered for service at age 38; a division teamster for Company I 25th WI Infantry which participated in the Atlanta campaign under General W.T. Sherman with battles at Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, Decatur, Atlanta and the "March to the Sea." Attended the war-end grand victory parade in Washington, D.C. June 1865. A farmer from the town of Smelser who served the Union 1862 until war's end in 1865; murdered 1868 in Lancaster, Grant County WI and buried in Lancaster Hillside Cemetery. William's wife, who was also his 2nd cousin, Nancy Caroline (Potter) Re(a)vis and his children returned to their former ancestoral home in, Menard Co. (Oakford/Petersburg area) IL following his death and sometime after 1870.
