As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Army and received military training in Hawaii.
On June 10, 1922, he was married to Miss Cleta Tennant of Dixon, Illinois. To this union one sone Gene and two daughters, Carmen and Beverly, were born, who together with their mother are left to mourn his passing. Besides his wife and three children, he leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Kreiss of Keosauqua, Iowa, four brothers and five sisters; Lawrence L. of Des Moines, Beedie of Sibley, Mrs. Florence Brown of Cantril, Mrs. Lena DeHart of Fairfield, Mrs. Lottie Mae Bowen of Marshalltown, Mrs. Edith Jemison, Joe, Bob and John Jr. of Keosauqua, together with a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
Harold has been a patient sufferer for the past seven years. Although the dreaded disease, arthritis, stiffened his limbs, he wore his smile to the very last. Everything that medical science and loving hands and hearts could do was done for him to bring relief but to no avail.
Funeral services, conducted by the Reverend C.H. Orf, were held at the Keosauqua Methodist Church, Wednesday afternoon, March 15, 1939. Burial was in the Purdom cemetery at Keosauqua, Iowa.
