John M. Kreiss, 90, formerly of Keosauqua and Mt. Pleasant, died at 10:05 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at Keokuk Area Hospital, Keokuk.
He was born November 28, 1906 in Keosauqua to John and Lottie Miles Kreiss. He married Wilma Hodges in 1932. They were divorced. He married Lena Thomas in 1961. She died April 17, 1987.
He grew up in Keosauqua, worked in construction and quarrying and in the maintenance department of Mt. Pleasant Mental Health Institute. He served in the U.S. Army durng World War II and was a member of Disabled American Veterans and National Rifle Association.
Surviving are two daughters, Maxine Kellum of Wyaconda, Missouri and Margaret "Peggy" Shapiro of Mountlake Terrace, Washington, a son, Merle Kreiss of Keokuk, 14 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, several step great grandchildren, and a sister, Lottie Mae Bowen of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joe, a daughter, Dawn Kreiss, 4 brothers, Lawrence, Harold, Joe and Bobbie Kreiss, and 4 sisters, Beedie Kreiss, Florence Hobbs, Lena DeHart and Edith Jemison.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 1997 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua , Rev. Bill Shewmaker officiating. Burial was in Fellows Cemetery, Keosauqua, with military rites by Beer-Barker Post 113, American Legion.
