My Aunt Angela or Pura, as she was known to everybody, was my mother's youngest sister. She was born in Caguas Puerto Rico to Natividad Ortiz and Paulino Maldonado (Ostolazza.) After her father's death, the family moved to New York, (Pura was 3 or 4 yrs old at the time.) In her teens, in the 50's, she lived in Puerto Rico with one of her older sisters (Alicia my mom.) Sometime later she returned to NY. I don't many more details about her living with my mom, for I wasn't born yet. I know about it because my mom used to mention it a lot.
Upon her return, she met and married Enrique Hernandez, who worked for the Post office, and had four children; Enrique Jr, Diana, Laura, and Roberto. The Hernandez' moved to Puerto Rico, from NY, in the 70's for a few years. Then moved to Augusta GA, in the 80's, only until Enrique was able to obtain a transfer to a post office in Jacksonville FL, which was his dream. Enrique's family resided there and he wanted to be close to them. But, unfortunately, that wasn't meant to be, for he passed away suddenly from a heart attack. Angela and her 4 children made Georgia their permanent home. Sometime later, she married Ismael Marcano, and remained his wife until her death.
Angela was a very welcoming woman. Happiness for her was to cook and entertain family and friends. She was always in the kitchen either cooking or getting ready to cook.
She had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but refused treatment. She would argue that she was not going to survive it, thus, there was no point in diminishing her quality of life. At the time I was, briefly, residing in Georgia so I had the opportunity to frequent her. So, at gatherings at her home, Chritmas dinners, birthday celebrations, mother's day, or just whenever we would gather at her house she would always say: "You see? had I listened to the doctors and gone for the chemo option, I wouldn't be here today." I don't know if that's the right thing to do or not, but the fact is that she managed to live 4 unbelievable years after being diagnosed without any treatment.
She was the one who always kept the family (on my mother's side), together. She also loved to keep in touch with her family and friends by phone. She really enjoyed being on the phone. At the end, she passed away in her sleep at her home in Blythe, GA. It was just the way she wanted it. In the privacy of her own home, in her bed, and without any hospital drama, in peace.
