James M. Kearns, Sr., resident of Bennington for most of his life and who had lived on North Branch street ext, for some years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alvin Sears, 40 Taft St., North Adams, Mass. this morning.
Born in New York City, March 11, 1897, he was 72 years old, son of the late Patrick and Honora Moore Kearns. He came to Bennington when he was seven years old and had received his education at the old St. Francis de Sales Academy, Old Bennington.
For 37 years he was employed at the Holden Leonard plant and later was with the H. E. Bradford Co. and Valentine Mills as a spinner.
He enjoyed baseball especially and as a young man played with local teams as a shortstop. He was very well known in this community and had resided on North Branch street for more than 40 years. He had been a member of Putnam Hose Company of Bennington Fire Department when a young man.
His marriage to Susan A. Snow was solemnized in 1913 at St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Fr. A. J. Parron performing the ceremony.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five daughters; Mrs. Alvin (Elizabeth) Sears, North Adams; Mrs. Joseph (Jane) Evans, Thompsonville, Conn.; Mrs. Robert (Katherine) Chaplman, Bennington; Mrs. Louis (Agnes) Flordani, North Adams; Mrs. William (Cecelia) Hassenpflug, Bennington; one son, James M. Kearns, Jr., Bennington; three sisters, Nora Kearns, New York City; Mrs. Edward (Margaret) Silver, Bennington and Mrs. Alfred (Alice) Swasey, Troy, N.Y.; one brother William F. Kearns Sr., Bennington; also 17 grandchildren, two great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held from Mahar Funeral Home Friday at 8:30 am with a prayer and from St. Francis de Sales Church at 9, where a requiem high Mass will be offered. Burial will be in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening after 7:30 and then at their convenience.
