William F. Kearns, Sr., Democratic Leader, Dies
William F. Kearns, Sr., 60, of 961 Gage St., former member of the Board of Civil Authority and active in Democratic circles for many years, died at Warner Nursing Home Monday afternoon. He had been in frail health for the past year and a half.
The son of Patrick and Honora (Moore) Kearns, he was born in Bennington, Jan 29, 1901. His education had been received at St. Francis de Sales Academy and Bennington High School. For more than 30 years he had been employed as a spinner at the H.E. Bradford Co. plant and later worked at Ben Mont.
In his younger years, he had been a prominent athlete as a catcher on semi-pro baseball teams in the area and was fond of watching all sports on television.
For many years he had belonged to the Eagle Hose Co. of Bennington Fire Department and he was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church and its Holy Name Society.
His marriage to the former Katherine Toohey took place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Hoosick Falls and they made their home in Bennington since that time.
Mr. Kearns was of a friendly nature and had a keen sense of humor.
Survivors besides his wife are four sons, William F. Kearns, Jr. of Montpelier, deputy Vermont Commissioner of Institutions; John P. Kearns of New Britain, Conn.; Robert F. and Donald J. Kearns of Bennington; three sisters, Miss Nora Kearns of New York City; Mrs. Edward L. (Margaret) Silver of Bennington and Mrs. Albert (Alice) Swasey of Troy, N.Y.. Nine grandchildren and also nieces and nephews are left.
The funeral will be held at Mahar and Son Funeral Home Thursday with a prayer at 8:30 am followed by a Requiem High Mass at 9 in St. Francis de Sales Church. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 pm today. The family will be in attendance tonight from 7 to 9 and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Recitation of the Rosary will be Wednesday at 9 pm.
