Vanderbilt was a director of the New York Central Railroad from 1913 and was a driving force behind the rail network until he was defeated for the control of the company in 1954. In 1925 Vanderbilt invented the game of contract bridge, which was later replaced by auction bridge. In the 1930s Vanderbilt successfully defended the America's Cup in international yachting competition with the "Enterprise" (1930), the "Rainbow" (1934) and the "Ranger" in 1937. In 1928 the Harold S. Vanderbilt Cup was created in his honor and awarded in future bridge game tournaments. His team won the cup in 1932.
