US Congressman. An attorney, he settled in the Wisconsin Territory in 1827, and set up a law practice in Green Bay. He served in the territorial legislature for six years before he was elected as a Democrat to represent Wisconsin as a Territorial Delegate to the United States House of Representatives. He serving a single term as a non-voting representative from 1845 to 1847. He returned to his law practice, and after Wisconsin was admitted into the Union as a State in 1848, he served in the State Legislature and the State Senate. When the Civil War began he offered his services, and was commission as a Major of Volunteers and Additional Paymaster on August 17, 1861. He served almost to the end of the conflict, resigning from the Army on April 28, 1865. After the war he was appointed as a Judge for Brown County, Wisconsin in 1875, and held that position until he died in 1887. He was a cousin of Wisconsin Congressman and Utah Territorial Governor James Duane Doty.
