Rita M. (Munson) Casey, of Gorham, died peacefully at MMC on Saturday, April 9, 2011, surrounded by her loving family after a long illness.
Rita was born on June 27, 1942, the daughter of Robert W. and Mary (Dorazio) Munson. Rita grew up in Portland schools graduating from Portland High in 1960. She continued over the years to keep in touch with her school friends and worked on many class reunion committees.
She married Richard F. Casey Sr. on May 12, 1962. Rita worked as a supervisor at Fairchild Semiconductor for 20 years retiring in 1985. While at Fairchild's she was a member of the Women's Bowling Team.
Rita loved people and was a member of many clubs including The Red Hat Society and was a past President and lifelong member of the Elvis Fan Club, President of the Women's Auxiliary American Legion Post 197 where she remained a Honorary Lifetime Member. During her years at the Legion she was always involved in any of the many fund-raisers and would do the cooking for many of the events they held.
She also was an avid gardener Red Sox Fan, Bingo and cribbage player. She played cribbage every morning before school with her son Jeff.
During their retirement, Richard and Rita summered in Maine and wintered in Winter Haven, Fla., for 15 years, where they had many good times with good friends. They celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with a trip to Hawaii.
Rita's disabilities did not stop her from staying in touch with family and friends by phone or online. Being of strong Italian heritage, she loved cooking, good food and company; she was proud to be Italian. She was passionate about gardening and had a green thumb to be envious of and it was very obvious if you had ever been to either of her homes.
Of all Rita's accomplishments she was most proud of her children and grandchildren and was happiest when they were all together at her home in Gorham.
She was predeceased by her son, Stanley M. Casey. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Richard Casey Sr.; her sons, Richard Casey Jr. and his wife Di of Windham, Jeffrey Casey and daughter Julie Dvilinsky both of Gorham; the 'lights' of her life her granddaughters, Brandy Casey, Carissa, Kasey, Erika and Meredith Dvilinsky; her brothers, Robert and Marie Munson of Portland, John Solak and Jeannie Riggs of Bath, Mike and Marie Solak of Portland, sisters, Theresa Solak-Eldert of Portland, Patty and Michael Schools of Buxton, Mary Ann and Richard Ellis of Gray and Jeanette Solak and John Griffin of Portland; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a very special thank you to the very compassionate and caring staff of nurses & doctors on the 9th floor ICU at MMC, especially Dr. Peter Croft, as they all went above and beyond for our family during a very difficult journey.
Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, at Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland.
