Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Enlisted on September 6, 1862 as a Private in Company B, 116th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Served throughout the entire length of the war, and was promoted to Sergeant before he was mustered out in June 1865. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863. His citation reads simply “Gallantry in the charge of the "volunteer storming party." His Medal was awarded to him on August 11, 1894. He was one of eight 116th Illinois soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for this action (the others being Sergeant Martin K. Davis, Captain Nicholas Geschwind, Private Andrew Johnson, Private Charles W. Rundle, Private Benjamin W. Schenk, Corporal Benona Sprague, and Private Thomas J. Ward).
