His father was Stephen Sprague, b. 22 June 1819 - d. 5 February 1856 • LZLC-L8K, not John as shown on the death certificate. A death certificate is reliant on an informant, usually a spouse, son, or daughter. James was very young when the father died. There was an older brother Joshua and one named John in the household, and his mother Miriam Long Sprague had a brother John. They lived very close to her family in same township.
