Arie (known to his family as Ike) was the 7th child of John and Mary (Kortlever) Burgraff. He was raised in Lynden, working as a laborer on local farms. As a young man he followed the work, traveling to Spokane to work on a road crew for the summers.

On 3 Aug 1927 he married Dorothy Josephine Johnson (daughter of Erick and Lucy (Wilson) Johnson) in Bellingham. They had four children:
Jack Arie (1927-1981)
Donald Erick (1930-2002)
Robert Ray (1932-2000)
Donna Louise (1934-2009)

Ike relocated his family to Oregon, working as a truck driver in the logging industry. He suffered from tuberculosis and died in the State Hospital in Salem. He was buried in the family plot in Monumenta Cemetery beside his younger brother Bert.
