Mr. Eiche and his brother Clifford sold produce at the city market under the Sixth Street viaduct here for many years. Their grandfather, Ferdinand Eiche, their father, William, and his brother, Henry, sold truck produce at the city market when it was located at Eight and Commercial Streets many years ago.
In the late 1920s, the city market was at a site along the alley between Fifth and Sixth Streets and south of Commercial. when the 1958 flood destroyed that market, the Eiche brothers continued to sell their produce under the Sixth Street viaduct, bringing it in each Saturday morning for their many faithful customers. With a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables, they were there every week well into the fall season.
Mr. Eiche was born Oct. 20, 1910, at the Eiche homestead in Sumner, and lived there all his life. His parents were the late William and Nettie Sandfort Eiche. the Eiche homestead was purchased by Mr. Eiche's grandfather from the Sumner town site in 1860.
Mr. Eiche attended Sumner grade school and was a graduate of Atchison High School. He enjoyed playing the organ and was a member and past president of the Atchison chapter of the Hammond Organ Society.
Survivors include two brothers, Clifford Eiche, Route 1, Atchison, and Ernest Eiche, Denver, two nieces, two nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
