Harold E. Greer, age 83, of Westerville and formerly of Marion, died Saturday evening, April 9, 2011, at the Highbanks Care Center in Worthington.
On November 4, 1927, Harold was born in Marion, Ohio, the son of the late Henry and Nellie (Kirts) Greer. He graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1947.
Shortly following graduation, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy to join his fellow countrymen in the fight of World War II. Serving aboard a submarine, he had the dangerous job of locating mines to enable their combat ships to be able to travel to the war zones.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Harold was employed by the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DCSC) for 30 years. He was a purchaser of supplies for the American Armed Forces.
An avid fisherman, Harold was most at peace upon the still waters of Lake Erie, where he stayed in his cabin on the lake as often as he could. He also loved taking trips to Las Vegas to visit Sam's Town.
An excellent cook, Harold loved trying and experimenting with new recipes. Proof of his love for cooking could be found in his home, as he had cookbooks and recipes scattered all throughout his home.
For many years, Harold was a member of the Central Christian Church in Marion.
A good man by any and all measures, Harold was often described "as a saint by everyone around him." He was "a rock," who was in control of his emotions and thoughts at all times and he possessed the virtue of patience. Most importantly of all though, Harold was "a family man" who would do anything for his beloved family.
Harold will be dearly missed by his wife of 64 years, Betty Greer of Gahanna, whom he married on January 24, 1947; two sons: Richard Greer of Gahanna, and Steven Greer of Worthington; five grandchildren: Ryan, Derek, Ashley, Joshua and Justin Greer; one great-granddaughter, Palynne Greer; and several nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Norton.
