Sarge was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Henry, Ill., to Louis and Alta (Reinhart) Hofer. He married Rita Grasser on April 25, 1953, at Mount Palatine, Ill. She survives in Putnam.
Also surviving are one son, Jim (Val) Hofer of Putnam; two daughters, Joy Schnidrig of Vancouver, Wash., and Jane (Paul) Loiselle of Hennepin, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Jessica, Brittney, Jordan, Seth, Arianna, Mitch, Alison and Madalyn; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Monier of Henry and Marj MacAllister of Chillicothe; and two brothers, Lee (Shirley) Hofer of Henry and Louis (Pat) Hofer of Morton.
His parents and one brother preceded him in death.
Sarge served his county in the Untied States Army during the Korean conflict, stationed in North Korea.
He was a member of the Henry American Legion, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Henry and Teamsters Local 627, Retirees Club.
Sarge and his brother, Lee, started Hofer Lanes in Henry in 1960. Later Sarge had worked for Vernon Henry Construction.
Visitation will be today, April 19, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Henry. A Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Church, with an hour prior visitation at the church. Father Thomas Mizeur will officiate. Full military rites will be accorded by the Henry American Legion Post following the Mass. Cremation will follow the service. Inurnment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in Henry.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Renovation Fund or to the Henry Food Pantry.
