U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar about 1845 and commenced to practice law in New York City. He was appointed the rank of Colonel on Governor Hunt’s staff in 1851, was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1858, plus engaged in manufacturing and banking. He served as first Mayor of Cohoes, New York, (1870-72), delegate to the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia, in 1872, served in the New York State Senate, (1872-73) and as United States Commissioner to the Vienna Exposition, in 1873. In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed banking until 1892 and lived in retirement until his death at age 78.
