Brent Esmon, an avid outdoor enthusiast from Nevada City, died of a heart attack while cross country skiing on March 27. He was 55.

A memorial ceremony will be held on a friend's property Saturday. (contact details omitted).

Prior to moving to Nevada City in 1998, Brent earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UC Berkeley and was a partner in the startup Bay Area biotechnology firm Prozyme. In 1998, Brent retired from full-time participation in the company to pursue his passion for outdoor sports and the less hectic lifestyle of Nevada City.

With the dedication of a scientist and the schedule of a retired person, Brent soon became an expert whitewater kayaker. Instead of heading to the gym each day, Brent would be skillfully challenging the Class 5 rapids on the South Fork of the Yuba.

There are very few people who have kayaked these sections of the river as often as Brent; he will be remembered at every bend.

When the river was too low or, rarely, too cold, Brent would ski, hike, mountain bike, camp and otherwise spend most of his time in the out of doors.

In 2004, Brent met, fell in love with and married Rosanne Paul, a local special education teacher. He quickly became a loved and respected friend and mentor to Roseann's three teenage children; Emily, Eric and Kai.

The next few years saw them together doing all the things he loved, including kayaking on mellower rivers. With typical dedication, Brent also learned to apply his many talents to becoming a rafter and meeting the challenges of fixing up an old house.

While he left us too soon, he left doing one of the things he liked best, and doing it with the person he loved most.
