U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1848, was principal of the Woodstock Academy Connecticut (1849-50), studied law and was a professor of mathematics, astronomy and meteorology, at Dartmouth College New Hampshire (1854-65). Entering politics, he was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives in 1862. He was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses, serving 1863-67. In 1867, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1873. After leaving the Senate, he was a regent of the Smithsonian Institution, a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (1877-78) and was the New Hampshire State superintendent of public instruction from 1881 until his death.
